ISO 9000
ISO 9000 puts in place requirements for quality with regards to the delivery of products and services. This document is used in conjunction with ISO 9001, 9002, 9003 and 9004 to create a set of standards for the manufacture of goods and the fulfillment of services. "ISO" stands for the International Organization for Standardization, which is the body in charge of evaluating the standards laid out in ISO 9000 and expounded upon in subsequent ISO documents. ISO 9000 was actually developed in England under the name BS 5750. The reason for the creation of this document had little to do with business. The guidelines were originally put in place to enable tighter manufacturing tolerances and more efficient procedures for the creation of bombs during World War II. Today, ISO certification is used in many industries as an indicator of quality. When determining certification, the ISO does not look at the end result of a manufacturing or other procedure. Rather, it is the processes involved in the creation of products that hold importance for the ISO. In order to qualify for ISO certification, companies must keep detailed records of the processes that go into the creation of products or the delivery of services. Many companies looking to gain recognition for ISO compliance choose software tools to keep track of required information. Here at Enterprise Solutions, we offer the QViS software package for business resource management tasks, including qualifying for ISO certification.
