Sarbanes Oxley Compliance In the wake of accounting scandals associated with WorldCom and other major corporations, the U.S. government took action to create a set of standards for business accounting practices. The result of this action was the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which was formalized in July of 2002. The fact that the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) package generated only three dissenting votes in the House and Senate combined indicates how seriously legislators regarded the tenets included in this act. The set of standards included in SOX requires businesses to track and disclose financial information, much of which was not previously regulated. Two of the most central requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are laid out in sections 302 and 404. Section 302 increases the responsibility and accountability of executives when it comes to dealing with and reporting on financial information related to the company in question. Section 404 increases standards for operating procedures (as they relate to company finances) by mandating the creation of an "internal control report."
